The Eucharist Strikes the Gospel

The Gospel Vs the Eucherist

The finished work of Christ’s atoning sacrifice – that really is the central theme of the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is why I am disturbed by forms of Christianity, or counterfeit Christianity, which convey the opposite; and I wish to point out something about that opposite which most folks don’t quite realize, and consider just another form of Christianity. I also point this out with some apprehension because of the likelihood of  being misconstrued as religious bigotry or hateful prejudice towards the other; and I also point this out with the utmost love and affection for my dear Catholic friends and family when I contrast the ‘Eucharist’ with the finished work of Christ.

You see, the only problem most non-Catholics recognize about the Eucharist, is the doctrine of ‘Transubstantiation’ – the belief that the wine and bread is transformed into the literal biological substance of Christ’s flesh- upon the blessing of the Priest. But there’s so much more to the Eucharist than just that:

Closely connected to the notion of Transubstantiation is the notion of Christ’s flesh being sacrificed again and again each and every mass. This is not merely a reenactment memorial like many understand, which I also thought for many years, but the intention of actually re-sacrificing Christ over and over. That is the real and central essence of the Eucharist, which is of course, diametrically opposed to the central theme of the Gospel’s finished work of atonement.

The Catholic crucifix is the visual representation of this meaning, and again, not just a commemoration, like I thought for so long, but a perpetual sacrifice; hence Christ is still and ever on the cross; and according to the Eucharist, it is not finished, but ever-continual.

The Canons and Decrees of The Council of Trent session 22, chapter IX

Canon 1. If anyone says that in the mass a true and real sacrifice is not offered to God; or that to be offered is nothing else than that Christ is given to us to eat, let him be anathema.

Canon 3. If anyone says that the sacrifice of the mass is one only of praise and thanksgiving; or that it is a mere commemoration of the sacrifice consummated on the cross but not a propitiatory one; or that it profits him only who receives, and ought not to be offered for the living and the dead, for sins, punishments, satisfactions, and other necessities, let him be anathema.

See the entire context of the above canons at: http://www.thecounciloftrent.com/ch22.htm

It’s important to note that the Decrees and Canons of the Council of Trent have been reaffirmed by Vatican Council II, which is the most updated review of Catholic Canons and Decrees.

So we can see these canons clearly define how it is believed that each mass is a true and real sacrifice,  and not merely a commemoration, nor praise and thanksgiving of what was done, but is presuming to sacrifice the body of Christ again and again and again- each and every mass.

The implications of this doctrine is startling. It’s as if Satan has freeze-framed that moment of time when it appeared that God’s Messiah was defeated – ignoring the resurrection – in which Christ conquered the power of death and sin, while striking a mighty blow to the head of that Serpent; yet pretends to suspend Jesus upon the cross to be ever suffering – so to gloat in a false victory over Christ during every mass.

I don’t know of any doctrine more satanic than that which strikes at the very core of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! A truly antichrist ritual if there ever was one!

So can we say that Catholicism is legitimately Christian when its central theme of the Eucharist is utterly opposed to the central theme of the Gospel?

I know that is a hot and provocative question which can spark great conflict, but it is really not in my nature to enjoy getting a rise out of people, and to be quite honest, I’m even rather afraid of conflict; but my passion for truth coupled with my deep compassion for people compels me to  speak the truth and not be silent, especially when it comes to the essential truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

John 19:30 It is finished”  tetelestai – paid in full, complete

Hebrews 10:10-18 …we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all; And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God… For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Whereof the Holy Spirit is also a witness to us: for after that He said before,

“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days”, said the LORD, “I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them; And their sins and iniquities I will remember no more”.  Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

And just to be clear, I reiterate the clincher of the above passage,  “Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.”

This core Gospel truth is a death strike into the heart of the Eucharist. Though the title of this article may be “The Eucharist Strikes the Gospel”, yet it is only a wound to the heal of Christ, but it’s the Gospel of Christ which strikes a defeating blow to the head of that beguiling serpent of old!
